Windows Svc And Registry Settings

Microsoft Office

Office Outlook creates a small ".fav" file where it stores the user´s shortcuts. This file is (in older versions) stored in C:\Windows where users have no permissions.
One can change the location where a "{name-of-mail-profile}.fav" is searched or created by the registry key
HKEY_CU\SW\MS\Office\??.0\Outlook\Office Explorer\Favorites:REG_SZ="{path-to-fav}\".

Windows Remote Assistance

does anybody know what this is for and who is needing this?

Windows Genuine Advantage Notification

A special windows automatic update, "Genuine Advantage Notify" might discover that windows´ serial key is invalid, but sadly there is no known reliable method of changing an installation´s serial key after the setup.

The problematic package seems to be "KB905474", which does not want to be uninstalled (and did therefore not create any uninstall files). It is important to verify that there is a legal license or Windows present, before the annoying message is removed by help of a phone call to Microsoft´s activation hotline, or technically, by renaming WgaLogon.dll and WgaTray.exe to *.no, then using regsvr32 to unregister LegitCheckControl.DLL, rebooting the system and then deleting all three files.

Two registry keys in LOCAL_MACHINE\SW\MS\WinNT\CV\WinLogon\Notify and LOCAL_MACHINE\SW\MS\Win\CV\Uninstall can also be removed.
This process is also described in a microsoft article.

Windows Remote Desktop / MicrosoftTerminalServices*

Microsoft Terminal Services allow remote viewing via the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) which by default runs over TCP port 3389.

The port number can be changed in:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp] Value "PortNumber"(REG_DWORD)=3389

Windows Small Business Server 2008/2011

parkingdenied.com/ROSS describes how to bypass SBS 2011's requirement of 4GB RAM if it can't be met, for example in a virtual machine (also for SBS 2008). Tested to work with 1.2GB RAM.

To get SBS 2008/2011 installer skip the memory requirement check (4GB in SBS 2011), set the following registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Setup] "SkipReq":REG_SZ="RamRequirement"
The Registry Editor can be accessed at the first screen after the first setup reboot by pressing <SHIFT>+<F10> to get into a command window and entering "regedit" <ENTER>.

Windows User Interface Tweaks

If you don't like the search doggie:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState] Value "Use Search Asst"(REG_SZ)="no"You can also just delete C:\Windows\srchasst (but remember to also delete these files in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache, otherwise Windows will keep restoring them for you).

Windows Auto-Run

Windows 7 limits the AutoRun feature on optical media. KB971029 is available from download.microsoft.com to get the same behaviour on Vista and XP SP2 or newer.
